Long before language, long before reasoning, long before narrative, there was pattern. A rustle in the grass. A shift in the wind. A shadow that moved differently from the others. The organisms that noticed survived. The ones that didn’t became lunch.
The ancient machinery
Our nervous system is built on ancient circuitry. It is tuned to detect threat, movement, repetition, and deviation. This machinery is fast, crude, and deeply biased toward false positives. It is better to mistake a branch for a snake than a snake for a branch.
